Some questions never produce a final answer.
Who is the greatest footballer of all time? Does God exist? Should we judge historical figures by the standards of their time or ours? People have debated such questions for generations, yet each generation returns to them.
That is the purpose of The Great Debates.
This category gives us room to examine subjects on which people genuinely disagree. We will begin with football by ranking the hundred greatest male players in history. Later, The God Debate will examine arguments about God, faith, reason, science, suffering and morality. Other subjects will follow.
The aim is not to manufacture controversy. The internet has enough of that already. Nor is it to pretend that every opinion is equally convincing.
We will examine the evidence, explain our reasoning and reach a conclusion. Readers will be free to disagree and present a better argument.
Pen Whispers was created for writing that leads to thought and conversation. Some of those conversations will be uncomfortable. Some will be entertaining. A few may change our minds.
That is what The Great Debates is for.
